Sparked by the hopeful ideas of one migrant in a time of despair, Café Justo (Just Coffee) has grown to become a sustainable, small-scale, international coffee cooperative, driven by providing pure, organic coffee in the spirit of justice. With nothing more than a cup of coffee and a fair trade plus business model, the cooperative promotes an alternative to migration, creating fair prices for customers in the US and just wages for coffee farmers in southern Mexico. Café Justo’s sister organization Café Justo y Mas (Just Coffee and More) is a cozy, youthful coffee shop that brings Café Justo to the Agua Prieta community in Sonora, Mexico. The coffee shop not only provides fresh, locally roasted coffee but a welcoming space for all kinds of community events. Here you can enjoy a fresh latte as you sit down for a local chess tournament or study session and know that a new batch of coffee beans are being freshly roasted while you are there. Visit their Facebook page, where you can see photos from their 6th Anniversary Celebration.
Together, committed to high quality service, Café Justo & Café Justo y Mas create a bond between coffee farmers and customers,
shifting profits from large, international corporations to individuals and families.
Café Justo and its sister organization, Café Justo y Mas, operate on a fair trade plus business model. By removing the middleman who purchases coffee from Mexican farmers and sells it to large American corporations, our fair trade plus system creates an opportunity for farmers to be in control of the process from start to finish. From harvesting, to roasting, to packaging, all the way to your doorstep, the cooperative’s partners are involved. This optimizes the farmers’ profits in a way that creates a just and livable income, eliminates their need to head north seeking work, and allows them to stay on their land with their families. Frontera de Cristo has been proud to serve as a partner with Café Justo since its establishment in 2003 and with Café Justo y Mas since its opening in 2016, watching one man’s dream become a reality that provides new life for many through both.
